The trade that flipped Pittsburgh's defense in a week
The Steelers were 0-2 and reeling when they sent a first-round pick to Miami for Minkah Fitzpatrick in September 2019. He intercepted a pass in his first game in black and gold and did not stop, snatching a league-high total of takeaways and earning first-team All-Pro honors that season despite arriving in Week 3. A defense searching for an identity found one in a free safety who plays like a centerfielder.
Miami had taken him 11th overall in 2018 out of Alabama, where he was a two-time national champion and a versatile chess piece for Nick Saban. In Pittsburgh he added first-team All-Pro nods in 2020, when he led the NFL with six interceptions, and again in 2022. He returned to Miami in a 2025 trade, closing a loop that started with the deal that made his name.
His Madden trajectory mirrors the leap. He was a 79 as a rookie in the 2018 edition, climbed to 89 by 2021, and topped out at 93 across the 2023 and 2024 games before a 92 in the 2025 edition.
