Anthony Spencer was born on January 23, 1984 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and played defensive end at Purdue, where he was the team's most valuable player in 2006. Dallas traded up to take him 26th overall in the 2007 draft. He played 16 games as a rookie linebacker with six starts, and Madden NFL 08 rated him 75.
He became a full-time starter at outside linebacker in 2009, lining up opposite DeMarcus Ware in the Cowboys' 3-4 defense, and started 61 games over the next four seasons. Madden NFL 11 rated him 84 for the 2010 season. Dallas used the franchise tag on him in 2012, and that year he recorded 11 sacks and a team-leading 95 tackles in 14 games, the only NFL player that season with at least 90 tackles and 10 sacks. He was added to the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement for Clay Matthews, and Madden NFL 25 rated him 89.
The Cowboys moved to a 4-3 front in 2013 and shifted him to defensive end. He played one game, at Kansas City in Week 2, before microfracture surgery on his left knee ended his season. He returned for 13 games in 2014 without a start, and Madden NFL 16 rated him 76. He signed with New Orleans in 2015 but did not play, and he finished with 33 career sacks, all with Dallas.
