Chris Simms: Texas QB, Bucs Third-Rounder, 3,117 Career Yards

Chris Simms was born on August 29, 1980 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, the son of New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, and grew up in Franklin Lakes. He played four seasons at Texas and went 26-6 as a starter. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took him with the last pick of the third round, 97th overall, in the 2003 draft. He did not take a regular-season snap as a rookie, and Madden NFL 04 listed him at 66 overall for the 2003 season.

Simms took over in 2005 after a knee injury ended Brian Griese's season. On November 13, 2005 he threw three touchdown passes in a 36-35 win over Washington, and Tampa Bay reached the playoffs. Madden NFL 06 listed him at 76 overall for 2005, and Madden NFL 07 raised him to 84 for the 2006 season.

On September 24, 2006, against Carolina, Simms ruptured his spleen and had emergency surgery that night; he later said he lost five pints of blood. He started three games that year and never started for Tampa Bay again. He appeared in one game for Tennessee in 2008 and started once for Denver in 2009, a season for which Madden NFL 10 listed him at 66 overall. He finished with 3,117 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, and later worked as an NFL analyst for NBC Sports.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
