Lito Sheppard was born on April 8, 1981 in Jacksonville, Florida, and attended William M. Raines High School there. He was a first-team All-American at Florida in 2000 and left school after his junior year. The Philadelphia Eagles took him 26th overall in the 2002 draft, and Madden NFL 03 rated him 69 for his rookie season.
In 2004 he intercepted five passes and returned two of them for touchdowns, and he was named first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection; Madden NFL 05 rated him 83 for that season. On October 8, 2006 he returned an interception 102 yards for a touchdown in a 38-24 win over Dallas, becoming the first player with two interception returns of more than 100 yards. He made a second Pro Bowl for 2006, a season for which Madden NFL 07 rated him 88.
He dislocated an elbow in a January 2007 playoff game against the Giants and lost playing time in 2008 behind Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown; Madden NFL 09 rated him 93 for 2008. Philadelphia traded him to the New York Jets in February 2009. He played for Minnesota in 2010 and Oakland in 2011, and finished with 19 interceptions. He was safeties coach for the Orlando Apollos of the AAF in 2019.
