An undrafted Cowboys safety shot in two incidents three years apart
Keith Davis was born on December 30, 1978 and grew up in Italy, Texas. At Sam Houston State he was Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and a Division I-AA All-American in 2001. Dallas signed him as an undrafted free agent after the 2002 draft, and he played eight games as a rookie with eight special teams tackles.
Before training camp in 2003 he was shot in the right hip and left elbow outside a Dallas club, and Bill Parcells released him on July 26. The Cowboys re-signed him on January 13, 2004 and sent him to NFL Europe, where he was named All-League and won World Bowl XII with Berlin Thunder. He started 15 games at free safety in 2005 and led the team with 16 special teams tackles, and Madden NFL 06 rated him 74.
On July 16, 2006 he was shot again, in the back of the head and right thigh while driving on a Dallas freeway, and drove himself to the hospital. He started six games that season, for which Madden NFL 07 rated him 76, and Madden NFL 08 rated him 77 for 2007. Re-signed in 2008, he was named a captain, started nine games and won the Ed Block Courage Award for playing with a torn pectoral muscle. Davis graduated from Sam Houston State in December 2018.
