Two pick-sixes in one Super Bowl, a record still standing

Dwight Smith owns one of the wildest afternoons in Super Bowl history. In the Buccaneers' 48-21 rout of the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, he intercepted Rich Gannon twice and returned both for touchdowns, becoming the first player ever to score two interception-return scores in a single Super Bowl.

Smith reached that stage the hard way, coming out of Akron as a third-round pick in 2001 after a senior year with 10 interceptions and consensus All-American honors. Tampa Bay's coaches turned him loose in a loaded secondary, and his Madden number climbed accordingly, from a modest 61 in the 2001 edition all the way to a 90 in the 2005 game as he grew into a full-time starter at safety.

After four seasons in Tampa he moved on to New Orleans in 2005, then Minnesota, and closed out an eight-year career with two seasons in Detroit. The two Super Bowl scores remain the line on his résumé nobody can top.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
