The 10th-overall guard from Kahuku who never sat down
Teams rarely spend a top-10 pick on a guard, but Chris Naeole made New Orleans an exception. A consensus All-American at Colorado, he went 10th overall in 1997, the highest a guard had been drafted since 1988. He was a mauler in the run game and, above all, durable to a fault.
Born in Kailua, Hawaii, and forged at Kahuku High, Naeole started 150 of 154 games across 11 professional seasons, missing exactly one along the way. He spent five years with the Saints before moving to Jacksonville in 2002, where he cleared lanes for Fred Taylor and anchored the right side of the Jaguars' line through 2007. A torn quadriceps tendon finally slowed him late in that season.
His Madden number climbed with his reputation as a road grader. Naeole sat at 76 in the 2000 edition, rose into the high 80s once he settled in Jacksonville, reached 90 in both the 2005 and 2006 games, and peaked at 91 in Madden 2007, the payoff for a decade of quietly winning at the point of attack.
