Michigan quarterback turned Bills tight end, 221 career catches

Jay Riemersma was born on May 17, 1973 in Evansville, Indiana, and grew up in Zeeland, Michigan. Michigan recruited him as a quarterback and he appeared in three games at the position across 1992 and 1993; a rotator cuff injury in 1994 ended that, and Gary Moeller moved him to tight end for his last two college seasons. Buffalo drafted him in the seventh round of the 1996 draft, 244th overall, and he did not play as a rookie.

He appeared in all 16 games in 1997 and scored a career-high six touchdowns in 1998, a season for which Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 67. Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 89 for the 2000 season, when he started all 12 games he played and scored five touchdowns. He started 15 games in 2001 and caught 53 passes for 590 yards, and Madden NFL 02 had him at 84 for that year.

Buffalo released him in February 2003 and Pittsburgh signed him that March; Madden NFL 04 put him at 71 for the 2003 season. He ruptured his right Achilles tendon on a touchdown catch against Jacksonville in December 2004 and announced his retirement in January 2006. He later worked for the Family Research Council and lost the August 2010 Republican primary in Michigan's 2nd congressional district to Bill Huizenga. He played eight seasons and finished with 221 receptions for 2,524 yards and 23 touchdowns.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
