Undersized fifth-rounder who anchored two AFC South defensive fronts
Gary Walker took the long road, from Hinds Junior College to Auburn to a fifth-round selection by the Houston Oilers in 1995. He was never the biggest interior lineman on the field, but he played with leverage and a quick first step that let him split double teams and live in the backfield. His best individual year came in Jacksonville in 1999, when he posted 10 sacks and helped push the Jaguars to a 14-2 season.
Walker earned back-to-back Pro Bowl nods in 2001 and 2002, the second after signing with the expansion Houston Texans, which made him the only man to play for both the Houston Oilers and the Houston Texans. He retired after the 2005 season with 46.5 sacks across 155 games. His Madden numbers mirror the climb almost exactly. A rookie afterthought rated 37 in the 1996 edition, he broke through at 89 in Madden 2000, and after a couple of years in the low 80s he surged again in Houston, topping out at 90 in the 2004 game before finishing at 88.
