Elvis Grbac was born on August 13, 1970 in Cleveland, Ohio. He played at Michigan, throwing to Desmond Howard during Howard's 1991 Heisman season and winning the Sammy Baugh Trophy in 1992, and San Francisco drafted him in the eighth round, 219th overall, in 1993.

Grbac backed up Steve Young for four seasons in San Francisco and made nine starts, among them a 38-20 win at Dallas on November 12, 1995. He was on the roster for the 49ers' Super Bowl XXIX win in the 1994 season, which Madden NFL 95 covered with a calculated 82. Madden NFL 97 listed him at 28 for 1996.

He signed with Kansas City in 1997 and started 47 games over four seasons there, throwing for 4,169 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2000 and earning his only Pro Bowl selection. Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 86 for his 1998 season, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 83 for 2000. Grbac signed a five-year contract with Baltimore in March 2001, went 8-6 as a starter, and was released the following March after declining to renegotiate, then retired with 16,774 passing yards and 99 touchdowns. In 2019 he was named athletic director and head football coach at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, the school he attended.
