They called him Big Daddy, and at Ohio State the 300-plus-pound Dan Wilkinson was a consensus All-American who left after his junior year. Cincinnati made him the first overall pick of the 1994 draft, the third defensive lineman taken at the top in a four-year span, and handed him a six-year, $14.4 million deal that made him the highest-paid Bengal at the time.

He never quite matched the hype in Cincinnati, though he led AFC interior linemen with eight sacks in 1995. His signature moment came in Washington: an 88-yard interception return for a touchdown against Chicago in 1999, the longest such return ever by a Washington defensive lineman. He played 13 seasons across the Bengals, Washington, Detroit and Miami, finishing with 54.5 sacks, 390 tackles and five interceptions from the defensive interior.

His Madden ratings map the arc of a player who took time to arrive. He was a 54 in the 1996 edition, climbed to 83 by the 2000 game, and hit his ceiling as a 90 in the 2002 edition during his Washington run. He settled into the mid-to-high 80s through his Detroit years before the ratings closed out.
