He arrived a decorated Hurricane, a two-time national champion in 1989 and 1991, the 1992 Big East Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American as a senior. The Houston Oilers took him in the second round, 47th overall, in 1993, and he settled in as a productive, sure-tackling linebacker who read plays before they developed.
His defining season came late. In 2003, in his second year with the New York Giants, he led the entire NFC with 150 tackles, proof that his instincts had not dulled with age. Over 13 seasons with the Oilers, Panthers, Giants, Redskins and Cowboys he piled up 1,125 tackles and 43 sacks, a stat line built on volume and durability rather than highlight blitzes.
Madden treated him as a steady climber. He sat at 80 in the 1996 edition, reached 89 by the 2001 edition during his Carolina years, and touched a peak of 90 in the 2004 edition on the strength of that NFC-leading tackle total.
