An All-Rookie Falcons safety whose card glitched high, then landed in Dallas

Roger Harper was a hard hitter out of Ohio State, a second-round pick of the Falcons in 1993 who walked into the lineup and stayed. He took over at strong safety by the fourth game of his rookie year, piled up 112 tackles, made the All-Rookie team and finished fourth in defensive rookie of the year voting, the promising start of a safety built to play downhill.

His Madden cards are a case study in the old scale's unreliability. The Madden NFL 95 entry lists a 92, propped up by a 90 speed and a 95 agility that no 225-pound strong safety ever actually had, a pre-1997 conversion quirk that makes the number meaningless. By the time the scale corrected he was a 39 in Madden NFL 97, a Cowboy by then, and the truth was somewhere in the wide gap between those two absurd extremes. A forearm fracture after a move to free safety in 1994 had already started to slow the early momentum.

Harper came to Dallas in a 1996 trade and lasted a single season before being released the following summer, then bounced through Green Bay's camp and the CFL. He finished with four interceptions and 245 tackles across fifty-six games, most of the real production packed into those first Atlanta years. The 92 and the 39 on his cards are both wrong, and the honest player, a physical starter whose best days came early, sits quietly between them.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
