Bucky Richardson: Texas A&M QB, Oilers' 1992 Eighth-Round Pick

Bucky Richardson was born on February 7, 1969 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, attended Broadmoor High School there, and played at Texas A&M. He rushed for 2,095 yards, a Southwest Conference record for quarterbacks, led the Aggies to two conference titles, was named SWC Offensive Player of the Year in 1991 and finished tenth in that year's Heisman Trophy voting. The Houston Oilers drafted him in the eighth round, 220th overall, in 1992.

Richardson appeared in seven games as a rookie and two in 1993, working in relief and on special teams. Houston traded Warren Moon after the 1993 season, and when Cody Carlson separated his shoulder in the 1994 opener Richardson made four starts, splitting the year with Carlson and Billy Joe Tolliver on a 2-14 team. He passed for more than 200 yards in the finale, a 24-10 win over the New York Jets that was Jeff Fisher's first as a head coach. Madden NFL 95 carried a calculated 82 for that 1994 season, a figure the game derived from the generous throwing attributes it assigned in that era rather than from his playing record.

The Oilers released him after drafting Steve McNair in April 1995. He later signed with New England, Dallas and Kansas City but never appeared in another regular-season game. He finished with 97 completions on 185 attempts for 1,257 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions, along with 225 rushing yards.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
