Scott Mitchell threw 32 TDs for the 1995 Detroit Lions
Scott Mitchell was born on January 2, 1968, in Salt Lake City and played at Utah, where he led the nation with 4,322 passing yards in 1988 and set an NCAA single-game record with 631 yards against Air Force. Miami drafted him in the fourth round of the 1990 draft, 93rd overall. He backed up Dan Marino until Marino ruptured an Achilles tendon in October 1993, then went 3-4 as a starter with 1,773 yards and 12 touchdown passes, a season Madden NFL 94 graded at a calculated 20.
Detroit signed him in March 1994 to a three-year contract worth $11 million. He threw 11 interceptions in his first nine starts before an injury ended his season and Dave Krieg took over, and Madden NFL 95 listed him at a calculated 88 for 1994. In 1995 he set Lions single-season records with 4,338 passing yards and 32 touchdown passes, a year for which Madden NFL 96 had him at a calculated 62.
A concussion knocked him out of Detroit's 20-10 wild-card loss at Tampa Bay on December 28, 1997. Rookie Charlie Batch took the job in 1998, a season Madden NFL 99 put at a calculated 81, and Detroit traded Mitchell to Baltimore in March 1999. He played his last snaps with Cincinnati and retired after the 2001 season with 15,692 passing yards, 95 touchdowns and 81 interceptions.
