The eleventh-round center who won four rings

Jesse Sapolu was born in Samoa, played his college ball at Hawaii, and lasted until the eleventh round of the 1983 draft, 289th overall. He then outlasted nearly everyone. Foot injuries cost him almost all of 1985 and 1986 before he had established himself, and he came back to anchor the interior of the 49ers line through four Super Bowl titles, at both center and guard, across fifteen years in one uniform.

Madden found him slowly and then all at once. He was a 56 for the 1991 season and a 63 for 1992, ordinary numbers for a veteran lineman, before the game caught up to his standing: an 86 for 1993 and a career-best 95 in Madden NFL '95 for the 1994 season, the year he made the second of his back-to-back Pro Bowls and won his fourth ring. Age took it back down, to a 76 and then a 62, the grade falling in step with his snaps.

Sapolu won titles after the 1984, 1988, 1989 and 1994 seasons, a span that covered two different 49ers cores, and did it as a player fans never chant for and coaches never replace. The eleventh-round center from Hawaii started on four champions. The number finally saluted him in 1994, a little late, the way it usually goes for the men up front.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
