Brent Jones was born on February 12, 1963 in San Jose, California, played college football at Santa Clara, and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round, 135th overall, in 1986. A car crash that May left him with a herniated disc in his neck, and Pittsburgh released him a month into the season. San Francisco signed him in 1987, and he became the starting tight end in 1989 after John Frank retired.

Jones missed six games in 1991 and caught 27 passes, and Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 62 for that season. He set a career high with 68 receptions in 1993, though Madden NFL 94 had listed him at a calculated 53 for that year. In 1994 he caught nine touchdown passes and the 49ers beat San Diego in Super Bowl XXIX; Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 78 for that season, the highest figure in his rating history.

He went to the Pro Bowl after each season from 1992 through 1995, and the Associated Press named him second-team All-Pro in 1993 and 1994. Madden NFL 97 listed him at a stored 58 for the 1996 season. Jones announced his retirement in December 1997 and finished with 417 receptions for 5,195 yards and 33 touchdowns in 143 games, all with San Francisco. He was inducted into the San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame in 2025.
