Charles Haley was born on January 6, 1964, in Gladys, Virginia, and played at James Madison, where he was a two-time All-American and left as the school's leading tackler with 506 stops. San Francisco took him in the fourth round of the 1986 draft, 96th overall. He led the NFC with 16 sacks in 1990, was named first-team All-Pro, and won two Super Bowls with the 49ers.

Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 99 for the 1991 season. San Francisco traded him to Dallas on August 27, 1992, and he won three more titles there. He recorded 12.5 sacks in 1994 and was first-team All-Pro a second time, a season Madden NFL 95 graded a calculated 97. Injuries limited him to five games in 1996, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 59.

He returned to San Francisco and played 16 games in 1999, a season Madden NFL 2000 rated a calculated 80. Haley was the first player to win five Super Bowls, made five Pro Bowls in 1988, 1990, 1991, 1994 and 1995, and finished with 100.5 sacks in 169 games. Dallas added him to its Ring of Honor in 2011, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.
