A blocking back the game briefly rated a 94

Marc Logan was a fifth-round back out of Kentucky who turned a decade in the league out of blocking, short yardage and special teams, the jobs that keep a roster running. He won a ring with the Bengals on the 1988 Super Bowl team, spent three years in Miami, and landed in San Francisco from 1992 to 1994, picking up a second ring on the Super Bowl XXIX champions.

Madden's card of his 49ers time carries one of the roster's more obvious glitches. The game rated Logan a 62 for the 1993 season, sensible for a blocking back, then jumped him to a 94 in Madden NFL '95 for 1994, a number that would make a journeyman fullback one of the best backs in football and is plainly a data error, since nothing he did on the field justified it. By the time he reached Washington the grade had crashed back to the 50s and then a 29.

Logan finished with 1,391 rushing yards, fifteen touchdowns and two Super Bowl rings across eleven seasons, a role player who was always useful and never a headliner. The lone 94 tells you nothing true about him. The two rings and the eleven years tell you plenty.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
