A Cowboys long snapper with three rings and 176 straight games

Dale Hellestrae was born on July 11, 1962 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was a two-year starter at offensive tackle for SMU and made All-Southwest Conference as a senior, and the Buffalo Bills drafted him in the fourth round, 112th overall, in 1985. Injuries to his thumb, wrist and hip held him to 28 games in four seasons in Buffalo. He signed with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1989 and spent the whole year on injured reserve after breaking his left fibula in training camp.

Dallas traded a seventh-round pick for him on August 20, 1990 and made him the long snapper. He held the job for eleven seasons and was on the roster for the Cowboys' wins in Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII and XXX. He had 10 special teams tackles in 1999, sixth on the team. Madden NFL 2001 rated him 67 for the 2000 season, his last in Dallas.

The Cowboys released him on March 1, 2001 for salary cap reasons, when his 176 consecutive games played stood second in franchise history behind Bob Lilly. Baltimore signed him on January 3, 2002 to replace injured rookie snapper Joe Maese, and he played one regular season game and two playoff games. He was not re-signed, finishing with 205 NFL games and two career starts, both at right guard for Buffalo in 1988.

Dale Hellestrae Madden Career Ratings

Scale (starred* rows) Only the starred 1-15-era seasons convert; modern rows stay 0-99.
Madden Team Pos OVR Speed

1994 NFL season
Cowboys LS 11* 23
How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
