One glitchy 94, and two Super Bowl rings

Ralph Tamm was a ninth-round pick out of West Chester in 1988 who turned a dozen years and seven teams into two Super Bowl rings, a fine outcome for an interior lineman nobody expected to stick. He was a guard, center and long snapper, the ultimate utility body, and he spent three seasons in San Francisco, from 1992 to 1994, winning a ring on the XXIX champions.

Madden's cards of him carry the familiar glitch. His best number was a 94 for the 1994 season, inflated by a 98 awareness rating that is plainly a data artifact, and his grades crashed into the 50s the moment he left for Denver, the honest range for a journeyman backup. The 94 is noise; the high-50s are the player.

Tamm won Super Bowl XXVI with Washington and Super Bowl XXIX with the 49ers, timing his roster spots well, and played 121 games for a long list of teams before retiring in 1999. He was a versatile reserve who could snap, guard and center, just the lineman who lasts precisely because he can do a little of everything. Madden's one big number is a glitch; the two rings are real.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
