When Larry Centers retired he had caught 827 passes, more than any running back in league history to that point, an absurd total for a man listed at fullback. Phoenix found him in the fifth round of the 1990 draft out of Stephen F. Austin, a small-school flyer who turned into a matchup nightmare out of the backfield. In 1995 he hauled in 101 receptions for 962 yards, becoming the first back to reach triple digits, and made the Pro Bowl that year and again in 1996. A third selection came in 2001 with Buffalo. He closed his career in New England, where the Patriots edged Carolina 32-29 in Super Bowl XXXVIII to give him a ring in 2003.

His Madden profile reflected a fullback the game actually feared. He was an 88 in the 1996 edition and climbed to 92 in the 2001 edition, peaking at 93 in the 2002 edition when defenses still had no answer for a fullback who ran routes like a slot receiver. The number eased to 86 by the 2004 edition as the catches and carries finally slowed.
