A converted skill player who became a starting safety
J.J. Wilcox came to safety late, a Georgia Southern player who started at receiver and running back before a single college season on defense, and Dallas still took him in the third round in 2013 on athleticism and hitting. He grew into a starting strong safety, a downhill thumper.
Madden opened him at a 68 and climbed him to an 81 by the 2018 edition, his best year a 74-tackle, three-interception 2014. He turned the Dallas years into a well-traveled career, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, the Jets and Atlanta, a raw athlete a defense trusted to fly around even if the coverage was imperfect.
