E.J. Henderson was born August 3, 1980, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and played college football at Maryland, where he was twice a consensus All-American and twice ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He won both the Butkus Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award in 2002. Minnesota drafted him in the second round, 40th overall, in 2003.
He made 93 tackles in 2004 as the middle linebacker, and Madden NFL 05 listed him at 81 for that season, a number Madden NFL 06 and Madden NFL 07 held for 2005 and 2006. He recorded 110 tackles in 2006 and 118 tackles with 4.5 sacks in 2007, and Madden NFL 08 raised him to 84 for 2007. Madden NFL 09 listed him at 92 for 2008, his highest, a season that ended after four games when he dislocated toes against Tennessee.
On December 6, 2009, at Arizona, his leg twisted as he tackled Tim Hightower and struck teammate Jamarca Sanford's helmet, breaking his left femur, and surgeons inserted a titanium rod. He returned for training camp in 2010, started all 16 games, made 105 tackles and three interceptions and was selected to the Pro Bowl. He added 107 tackles in 2011. Over nine seasons, all with Minnesota, he recorded 749 tackles, 15.5 sacks and five interceptions in 125 games.
