Undrafted 'Mooney' Ward, traded for a guard, became a lockdown corner

Ward's path to a starting job ran through junior college, Middle Tennessee, and an undrafted signing with Dallas in 2018 that lasted until the Cowboys traded him to Kansas City for guard Parker Ehinger before he ever played a game. In Kansas City the corner his mother nicknamed Mooney grew into a starter and won Super Bowl LIV over San Francisco, breaking up a pass in the fourth quarter of that comeback.

He signed a three-year deal with the 49ers in 2022 and delivered his finest football in 2023, setting a career high with 23 pass breakups and tying for the league lead in interceptions on the way to his first Pro Bowl. In October 2024 his infant daughter, Amani Joy, died, and he left San Francisco the following spring for Indianapolis. His Madden grade climbed with the play: a 67 in the 2019 edition, into the low 80s, and a peak of 91 in the 2024 edition after the Pro Bowl season.
