Patrick Peterson was born on July 11, 1990, in Pompano Beach, Florida, and played at Blanche Ely High School and then LSU, where he won the Bednarik and Thorpe awards in 2010. Arizona drafted him fifth overall in 2011. He returned four punts for touchdowns as a rookie, tying the single-season record, one of them a 99-yarder in overtime against St. Louis, and Madden NFL 12 listed him at 82 for that season.

He was named first-team All-Pro as a return specialist in 2011 and again at cornerback in 2013 and 2015, and he made the Pro Bowl in each of his first eight seasons. Madden NFL 15 gave him a 93 for the 2014 season, the highest figure of his career, and Madden NFL 21 had him at 88 for 2020, his tenth and last year in Arizona.

Peterson signed with Minnesota in 2021 and played two seasons there, drawing a 78 in Madden NFL 23 for the 2022 season, then started 16 of 17 games for Pittsburgh in 2023. He was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. He signed a one-day contract with the Cardinals and retired in April 2025 with 36 interceptions in 201 regular-season games.
