The Fail Mary catch that closed out the replacement-ref era
In September 2012, Golden Tate leapt into a Green Bay end zone, wrestled the ball alongside safety M.D. Jennings, and the replacement officials ruled it a Seattle touchdown. The Fail Mary won the game 14-12 and helped end the referee lockout within days. That knack for turning a scrum into a highlight defined him. A second-round pick, 60th overall out of Notre Dame in 2010 where he won the Biletnikoff Award, Tate spent four years in Seattle and left with a Super Bowl XLVIII ring after the 43-8 rout of Denver.
His best football came in Detroit from 2014 to 2017, catching passes from Matthew Stafford and stacking 90-plus reception seasons as a run-after-catch terror. He earned his lone Pro Bowl nod for 2014. Later he caught the go-ahead fourth-down touchdown from Nick Foles in Philadelphia's 2018 wild-card win over Chicago.
Madden watched him climb in step with the production. He entered as a 75 rookie in the 2010 edition, dipped to 71 in 2011, then rose to 84 by 2014 and topped out at 89 across the 2016 and 2018 releases before settling to 84 in 2020, his final Giants year.
