A 6-foot-3 press corner built to smother receivers
Sean Smith did not fit the mold. At 6 foot 3 and 220 pounds he was closer to a small forward than a typical cornerback, and Miami bet on the length when it took him 61st overall in 2009 out of Utah. He pressed at the line and used his frame to wall off the sideline, a matchup receivers hated to see across from them.
He started for the Dolphins from 2009 through 2012, then signed with Kansas City, where in 2013 he took an interception 100 yards the other way against Buffalo. He finished with 14 career picks across stops in Miami, Kansas City, and two seasons with the Raiders. His playing days ended under a cloud: in 2018 he was sentenced to a year in jail following a felony assault conviction in California, and the NFL suspended him.
His Madden line traced the rise into a lead role. He was a 75 as a rookie in the 2009 edition, reached an 85 in the 2014 game, and hit a career-high 91 in the 2015 edition during his Chiefs years before easing back into the mid-80s.
