The 49ers safety whose hits drew fines and respect

Dashon Goldson hit people for a living, and the league noticed both ways. A fourth-round pick out of Washington, 126th overall in 2007, he grew into one of the NFL's most feared deep safeties for San Francisco, patrolling the back end of the Jim Harbaugh defenses that reached Super Bowl XLVII. In that game against Baltimore he logged nine combined tackles in a 34-31 loss.

He made the Pro Bowl after the 2011 season and earned All-Pro honors in 2012, intercepting 20 passes over his career. His style came at a cost, drawing repeated fines for helmet-to-helmet collisions, including a $77,500 penalty in late 2012. He cashed in with a big free-agent deal in Tampa Bay before later stops in Washington and Atlanta.

His Madden numbers rose with his reputation as an enforcer. He was a 71 in the 2007 edition, bottomed out at 62 in the 2009 game, then climbed to 80 and stayed near it before hitting his high of 90 in the 2013 edition after that All-Pro season. The rating cooled to 81 and then 74 as he changed teams and his prime passed.
