Courtney Brown was born February 10, 1984, in San Francisco and played at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, starting as a true freshman at wide receiver before moving to cornerback in 2003. He intercepted seven passes in 2005 to tie a school record and allowed no touchdowns as a senior in 2006. He ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at a pro day in March 2007, and Dallas drafted him in the seventh round, 212th overall.

The Cowboys kept him over Abram Elam on the final preseason cut in 2007, the year Madden NFL 08 rated him 65. A left biceps injury in practice that September left him inactive for five games, and he finished with eight appearances, six tackles and a fumble recovery. Dallas moved him to strong safety in 2008 and gave him the only start of his NFL career. Madden NFL 09 rated him 67 that season.

Dallas waived him on September 5, 2009 over his tackling, and he spent that season out of football. Madden NFL 10 rated him 58. The New York Giants signed him to a future contract in January 2010 and placed him on injured reserve with an ankle injury that September. He never played a game for the Giants. His NFL record was 17 games, one start, 13 tackles and no interceptions, all for Dallas.
