Pat Watkins was born on December 18, 1982 and played high school football at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida. He recorded 10 interceptions in 49 games at Florida State. The Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the fifth round, 138th overall, in 2006, and at six foot five he was one of the tallest safeties in league history.
He started nine of his 14 games as a rookie, with 49 tackles and three interceptions. In 2007 he became a gunner on special teams, led the Cowboys with 25 special-teams tackles and returned a blocked field goal 68 yards for a touchdown against Minnesota; Madden NFL 08 rated him 78 for that season. A neck injury cost him eight games in 2008, the season Madden NFL 09 rated him 76. Madden NFL 10 rated him 67 for 2009, when he made 18 special-teams tackles.
San Diego signed him in November 2010 and placed him on injured reserve the next month, and Madden NFL 11 rated him 68 for that season. He signed with the Toronto Argonauts in May 2012, started 18 games at right cornerback and tied for the CFL lead with five interceptions, taking All-Star honors in 2012, 2013 and again with Edmonton in 2014. He played five NFL seasons and five in the CFL, winning the 103rd Grey Cup with Edmonton in 2015.
