Sam Hurd was born on April 24, 1985 in San Antonio, Texas, and caught 143 passes for 2,323 yards at Northern Illinois. Dallas signed him as an undrafted free agent on May 1, 2006. His first NFL reception came on Tony Romo's first NFL pass, a 33-yard gain against Houston, and he was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week as a rookie.
Madden NFL 08 rated him 66 for 2007, when he was the third receiver with 19 catches for 314 yards. Ankle injuries held him to three games in 2008, and Madden NFL 09 rated him 73 for that season, his highest figure. He led Dallas with 19 special teams tackles in 2009, a season for which Madden NFL 10 rated him 65, and was named special teams captain in 2010. He signed a three-year contract with Chicago on July 29, 2011.
Hurd was arrested in Chicago on December 14, 2011, and the Bears released him two days later. He pleaded guilty in April 2013 to conspiring to possess cocaine and marijuana with intent to distribute, and was sentenced on November 13, 2013 to 15 years in federal prison. He was released to community confinement on January 31, 2023 and discharged from his sentence on February 23, 2023. He finished with 53 receptions for 739 yards and two touchdowns.
