Bobby Carpenter was born on August 1, 1983 in Lancaster, Ohio, the son of NFL running back Rob Carpenter. He played as a true freshman on Ohio State's 2002 national championship team, made 191 tackles with 14.5 sacks in 50 games, and was second-team All-Big Ten in 2004 and 2005. Dallas drafted him 18th overall in 2006, a pick Bill Parcells pushed for after coaching his father. Madden NFL 07 rated him 82 for 2006.
He started once as a rookie and made five tackles in the wild-card loss at Seattle. He played all 16 games without a start in 2007, a season Madden NFL 08 rated him 78. He took over as nickel linebacker in 2009 and posted 46 tackles, and Madden NFL 10 rated him 62 for that year. He made 96 tackles across four Cowboys seasons.
Dallas traded him to St. Louis for Alex Barron on May 10, 2010, and the Rams cut him that September. He played five games for Miami before Detroit signed him in October. On October 2, 2011 he returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown against Dallas in a 34-30 Lions win, a season Madden NFL 12 rated him 73. Four games with New England in 2012 were his last. He joined 97.1 The Fan in Columbus in 2013 and later earned an MBA at Ohio State. He finished with 167 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 93 games.
