Michigan safety turned coverage linebacker on a title team
June came to Indianapolis as a safety. Drafted in the sixth round, 198th overall, in 2003 out of Michigan, he was converted to weakside linebacker in Tony Dungy's speed-first Cover 2, where his range mattered more than his bulk. At 6-foot, 225 pounds he was undersized for the spot and covered ground like the defensive back he used to be. In 2005 he led the 13-0 Colts with five interceptions, a startling rate for a linebacker, and earned a Pro Bowl start.
He was part of the Colts defense that won Super Bowl XLI over Chicago the following season, then signed with Tampa Bay and later Houston, finishing with 499 tackles and 12 interceptions. Madden rewarded the coverage instincts: a 73 in the 2004 edition, rising every year to a top mark of 91 in the 2008 edition, before a sharp drop to 68 in the 2009 edition as his career wound down.
