The East Boston kid who caught the Snow Bowl comeback

Jermaine Wiggins grew up in East Boston and went undrafted out of Georgia in 1999, which made his defining moment all the sweeter. In the January 2002 divisional playoff against Oakland, the snow game that turned on the tuck rule, Wiggins caught 10 passes for 68 yards as New England clawed out of a fourth-quarter hole. Two weeks later he grabbed a seven-yard reception on the winning drive of Super Bowl XXXVI.

He was never fast, but his hands were dependable, and that kept him employed across six franchises. After stops with the Jets, Patriots, Colts, and Panthers, he did his best work in Minnesota, posting a career-high receiving season in 2004 as Daunte Culpepper's safety valve.

Madden charted the climb from afterthought to starter. Wiggins sat at a 52 in the 2001 edition and a 62 in 2002, then rose with his Minnesota production to an 86 in 2005 and a peak 90 in the 2006 game before slipping to an 82 in 2007. East Boston High retired his jersey in 2011, a rare honor for an undrafted tight end who simply would not drop the ball.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
