A small-school safety who picked off 29 in Kansas City
Kansas City found him in the third round of the 2000 draft out of tiny Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and he made the all-rookie team that fall. What followed was eight seasons of a ball-hawking free safety who turned quarterback mistakes into field position and points. He intercepted 29 passes as a Chief, 22 of them in a four-year burst from 2002 through 2005, and returned them for 542 yards.
He was more than a coverage man, adding 592 tackles, six sacks, and eleven forced fumbles over his Kansas City run. His hold on a starting job finally loosened in 2007, when Bernard Pollard took the spot, and he closed out with a brief 2008 stay in Oakland.
His Madden overall tracked that arc closely. After a 62 in the 2001 edition, it surged to a career-best 91 in the 2004 game, then held in the mid-80s through the middle of the decade before tailing off. For a small-college safety who arrived with little fanfare, the number was earned interception by interception.
