Jeremy Newberry was born on March 23, 1976 in Antioch, California, played college football at California, and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of 1998, 58th overall. He started all 16 games at right guard in 1999, a season for which Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 72, then moved to center in 2000 and held the job for six seasons.
He was a Pro Bowl selection after the 2001 and 2002 seasons and an All-Pro in 2002. Madden NFL 04 rated him 91 for 2003, and Madden NFL 05 rated him 93 for 2004, a year knee problems limited him to one game. He won the 49ers' Bobb McKittrick Award as the team's outstanding lineman in 2000, 2003 and 2005, and the Ed Block Courage Award in 2003 and 2005.
Newberry did not play in 2006, started 14 games for Oakland in 2007, and appeared in 16 for San Diego in 2008, a season Madden NFL 09 rated 85. He retired on July 22, 2009 with 120 games and 107 starts. He later worked as an NFL analyst in San Francisco and was a lead plaintiff in the 2014 class-action suit brought by retired players over painkiller use, attributing his stage 3 kidney failure to the Toradol injections he took before games.
