Rob Johnson was born on March 18, 1973, in Newport Beach, California, and played college football at USC, winning the 1995 Cotton Bowl Classic in his final game. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the fourth round of the 1995 NFL draft with the 99th pick. He appeared in one game as a rookie, and Madden NFL 96 gave him a calculated 66 for the 1995 season.
On August 31, 1997, starting for the injured Mark Brunell, Johnson completed 20 of 24 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third score in a 28-27 win over Baltimore, the highest completion percentage recorded by a first-time starter. Jacksonville traded him to Buffalo in February 1998, and he signed a five-year, $25 million contract. Madden NFL 99 gave him a calculated 79 for 1998. Wade Phillips started him over Doug Flutie in the wild-card game at Tennessee on January 8, 2000, which ended on the Music City Miracle.
Johnson started 11 games in 2000, a season in which he was sacked 49 times, and Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 85. Madden NFL 02 had him at 72 for 2001, a year a broken collarbone cut short. He backed up Brad Johnson at Tampa Bay in 2002 and was on the roster for the Super Bowl XXXVII win, then played two games each for Washington and Oakland in 2003. He finished with 5,795 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, 23 interceptions and 877 rushing yards.
