Cardinals and Broncos QB, 1996 first-team All-American at ASU

Jake Plummer was born on December 19, 1974 in Boise, Idaho, and played college football at Arizona State. On September 21, 1996 he led the Sun Devils to a 19-0 shutout of top-ranked Nebraska, and he closed that season third in the Heisman voting and a first-team All-American. The Arizona Cardinals drafted him in the second round of the 1997 draft, 42nd overall.

Plummer started all 16 games in 1998, with Pat Tillman playing all 16 as a rookie as Arizona went 9-7 and won a playoff game at Dallas, the franchise's first postseason victory since 1947. Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 87 overall for that season, and Madden NFL 2000 raised it to a calculated 91 for 1999, a year in which he threw nine touchdowns against 24 interceptions. Madden NFL 02 cut him to 73 for 2001, though he passed for 3,653 yards and took every Arizona snap that season.

He signed with Denver in 2003 and posted a career-high 91.2 passer rating. On October 31, 2004 he threw for 499 yards against Atlanta. In 2005 he threw 229 consecutive passes without an interception, made the Pro Bowl and started the AFC Championship Game, a 34-17 loss to Pittsburgh. Madden NFL 07 rated his 2006 season at 90, the year Mike Shanahan replaced him with rookie Jay Cutler on November 27. Traded to Tampa Bay in March 2007, Plummer retired days later with 29,253 passing yards and 161 touchdowns.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
