Tony Banks: Michigan State QB, 15,315 Yards, Super Bowl XXXV Ring

Tony Banks was born on April 5, 1973 in San Diego, California, played two years at San Diego Mesa College, then transferred to Michigan State. The St. Louis Rams took him 42nd overall in 1996, the first quarterback selected that year. He started 13 games as a rookie, made the PFWA All-Rookie Team, and fumbled 21 times. Madden NFL 98 carried a calculated 76 for his 1997 season.

St. Louis signed Trent Green and traded Banks to Baltimore in 1999 for fifth- and seventh-round picks. He replaced Scott Mitchell and Stoney Case and threw 17 touchdowns against eight interceptions for 2,136 yards, a season for which Madden NFL 2000 carried a calculated 71. Madden NFL 2001 then listed him at 83 for 2000, the highest of his career. Baltimore replaced him with Trent Dilfer that October and won Super Bowl XXXV.

Washington signed Banks in 2001, and he started 14 games and became the first quarterback to follow an 0-5 start with five straight wins. He joined Houston as David Carr's backup, spending 2002 on the roster without playing, a season for which Madden NFL 03 listed him at 64. He appeared in 14 games across 2003, 2004 and 2005, and the Texans released him on February 28, 2006. He finished with 1,278 completions on 2,356 attempts for 15,315 yards, 77 touchdowns and 73 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
