Consensus All-American center, 44 NFL games for Dallas

Clay Shiver was born on December 7, 1972 in Tifton, Georgia, and played center at Florida State, snapping for the 1993 national championship team. He won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy in 1994 and 1995, was a three-time first-team All-ACC selection, and was a consensus All-American in 1995. The Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the third round of the 1996 draft, 67th overall.

He backed up Ray Donaldson as a rookie and played 14 games, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 65 for the 1996 season. He replaced Donaldson in 1997 and started all 16 games, the only Dallas lineman to start every game at one position. Madden NFL 98 gave him a calculated 59 for that 1997 season.

He started the first nine games of 1998 before a turf toe injury cost him the job to Mike Kiselak, and Madden NFL 99 gave him a calculated 82 for the 1998 season, a year in which he played 14 games. He signed with Denver in 1999 and was waived before the season, then signed with Carolina that December without appearing in a regular-season game, and the Panthers released him in August 2000. He was inducted into the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, and finished with 44 NFL games and 25 starts.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
