Shane Matthews was born on June 1, 1970 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He started three seasons at Florida under Steve Spurrier from 1990 to 1992, led the SEC in passing all three years, was twice named SEC Player of the Year, and finished with 9,287 passing yards and 74 touchdowns. He went undrafted in 1993 and signed with the Chicago Bears, spending four seasons there before appearing in his first regular-season game in 1996.

After two seasons as a backup in Carolina, Matthews returned to Chicago in 1999 and started seven games, throwing for 1,645 yards and ten touchdowns. Madden NFL 2001 listed 78 overall for the 2000 season, his highest figure. He started five games in 2000 and three in 2001, and relieved an injured Jim Miller in Chicago's playoff loss to Philadelphia in January 2002. Madden NFL 02 listed 69 for the 2001 season.

He signed with Washington in 2002 to play for Spurrier again, started seven games and threw for 1,251 yards and eleven touchdowns. Madden NFL 04 listed 72 for the 2003 season, in which he did not appear in a regular-season game. He made three appearances for Buffalo in 2004 and none in 2005. Over 32 games he completed 492 of 839 passes for 4,756 yards and 31 touchdowns, and he later coached quarterbacks and offenses at Florida high schools.
