Jay Fiedler: Dartmouth QB Who Followed Marino in Miami

Jay Fiedler was born on December 29, 1971 in Oceanside, New York, and played college football at Dartmouth, where he set Ivy League records with 58 touchdown passes and 6,684 passing yards. He went undrafted in 1994 and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. Madden NFL 96 carried a calculated 53 overall for the 1995 season.

After a year coaching receivers at Hofstra and stints with Minnesota in 1998 and Jacksonville in 1999, Fiedler signed a three-year contract with Miami in 2000 and replaced Dan Marino as the starter. The Dolphins won the AFC East at 11-5, and on December 30, 2000 Fiedler beat Indianapolis 23-17 in overtime in the wild-card round. Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 76 overall for that season. He threw for 3,290 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2001, and Madden NFL 03 listed him at 77 for the 2002 season.

Fiedler went 7-4 as a starter in 2003, and Madden NFL 04 listed him at 84 overall for that season. He was benched for A.J. Feeley after week one of 2004 and later reinstated. He signed with the Jets in 2005 and, on September 25, 2005 against Jacksonville, relieved the injured Chad Pennington and then tore up his own shoulder, ending his season. He never played again and finished with 11,844 passing yards, 69 touchdowns and 66 interceptions in 76 games.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
