The undrafted Cardinal whose four picks ended a 15-year drought

On the final Sunday of the 1998 season, Kwamie Lassiter intercepted Chargers quarterback Craig Whelihan four times in a 16-13 win, and Arizona clinched its first playoff berth in 15 years. An undrafted free agent out of Kansas who had come up through Butler County Community College, he had the game of his life exactly when the franchise needed it.

Lassiter was no one-day story. In 2001 he set career highs with nine interceptions and 112 tackles and earned Pro Bowl alternate recognition, and he closed with 25 interceptions across eight years in Arizona plus stops in San Diego and St. Louis. He was a heady, sure-tackling safety on Cardinals teams that gave him little help.

His best Madden grade landed right after that peak season. He sat at 84 in the 2000 and 2001 editions before jumping to a 92 in the 2002 game, the reward for those nine picks, then eased back into the mid-80s through 2005. Lassiter died on January 6, 2019, at age 49, suffering a heart attack while exercising.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
