Illinois fullback who won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII

Howard Griffith was born on November 17, 1967, in Chicago and played college football at Illinois, where on September 22, 1990 he scored eight touchdowns against Southern Illinois, an NCAA single-game record. The Indianapolis Colts drafted him in the ninth round in 1991, but he never played a regular-season game for them. He debuted with the Los Angeles Rams in 1993. Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 94 for the 1994 season, when he started 10 games in the Rams backfield.

Carolina took him in the 1995 expansion draft, and he started 14 games for the Panthers in 1996, a year Madden NFL 97 rated him 33. Denver signed him in February 1997, and he spent four seasons as the lead blocker for Terrell Davis. The Broncos won Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII, and Griffith scored two rushing touchdowns in the second of those, a 34-19 win over Atlanta on January 31, 1999. Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 90 for the 1998 season.

He started all 16 games in 1999 and 14 more in 2000, his last season of NFL football. Madden NFL 02 rated him 94 for 2001, a season he missed entirely after a preseason neck injury. Griffith retired in 2002 with 351 rushing yards, 122 receptions for 844 yards and 12 touchdowns.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
