The Butkus winner who anchored the Jets for a decade

Marvin Jones arrived in New York as the fourth overall pick of the 1993 draft, fresh off a Florida State season that brought him the Butkus and Lombardi awards as the best defender in college football. He never left. Across eleven seasons the Jets middle linebacker played 142 games and piled up 1,021 tackles, and in 2001 he set a personal best with 137 stops.

He missed the entire 1998 season to a knee injury and came back to keep starting into his thirties. Teammates called him Shade Tree for the way ballcarriers seemed to vanish underneath him. Madden logged the whole arc: a 71 in the 1996 edition when he was still finding his footing, an 86 in 2000, then a career-high 91 in the 2001 game that lined up with that 137-tackle year. The number settled to 90 in 2002 and drifted to 83 by 2004 as the miles added up. His son later reached the NFL as a linebacker too.
