Darrin Smith Madden Career 1995-2005 - Peak 80 OVR

Darrin Smith was a fast, rangy weakside linebacker out of Miami, a second-round pick of the Cowboys in 1993 who started immediately on a championship defense. He was the coverage linebacker on those dynasty teams, quick enough to run with backs and tight ends, a valuable piece on a front full of them.

Madden mostly left his overall unlisted in the old-scale Dallas years and later rated him a steady starter, peaking at an 80 with New Orleans, the grade of a solid, unspectacular linebacker whose value was in his range rather than his numbers.

Smith won two Super Bowls in Dallas, then moved on to the Eagles, Seahawks and Saints, where he kept starting deep into his thirties. He finished with 782 tackles, 24 sacks and 11 interceptions across a twelve-year career, the well-rounded line of a genuinely useful three-down linebacker. He was never a Pro Bowler, but he started for more than a decade and did a little of everything.
