Michael Thomas was born on March 3, 1993 in Los Angeles, the nephew of former NFL receiver Keyshawn Johnson. He played at Ohio State, and the New Orleans Saints drafted him in the second round in 2016, 47th overall. He caught 92 passes for 1,137 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie. Madden NFL 17 rated him 70.

Thomas led the NFL in receptions in 2018 with 125 and again in 2019 with 149, a single-season record. Madden NFL 19 rated him 91 for the 2018 season. That 2019 season brought 1,725 receiving yards, a second straight first-team All-Pro selection and the Offensive Player of the Year award, the first won by a wide receiver since Jerry Rice in 1993. He made three Pro Bowls, in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Madden NFL 21 rated him 99 for the 2020 season. An ankle injury held him to seven games that year, and further ankle surgery cost him all of 2021. He played three games in 2022 and ten in 2023, a season that ended on injured reserve with a knee injury. Madden NFL 24 rated him 84. New Orleans released him on March 13, 2024. He left the Saints with 565 receptions for 6,569 yards and 36 touchdowns.
