An 82 in Minnesota, a glitched 22 in San Francisco

Adrian Cooper was a fourth-round tight end out of Oklahoma who spent six seasons as a blocking and depth option, mostly with the Steelers and Vikings before a single year in San Francisco in 1996. He was a journeyman at a journeyman's position, catching a few passes and blocking when asked.

Madden's grades for him swing hard, as they do for a lot of role players. His best card was an 82 for the 1994 season with Minnesota, and his 49ers card crashed to a 22, one of those wild scraping errors that bear no relation to the actual player. The truth was a tight end somewhere in the middle, a serviceable backup.

Cooper finished with 87 catches for just over 1,000 yards and five touchdowns across his career, then was out of the league after 1996. He was a role player who did the unglamorous work at tight end for six years, and his lone 49ers season drew a 22 the game clearly did not mean. He deserved better than that number, though not by a lot.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
