Mo Lewis was born on October 21, 1969 in Atlanta, Georgia, played college football at Georgia, and was drafted by the New York Jets in the third round, 63rd overall, in 1991. He started 15 games as a rookie and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team, a season Madden NFL 92 put at a calculated 40. He then started all 16 games in each of the next four seasons.

Madden NFL 97 rated him 85 for the 1996 season. He served as the Jets' defensive captain from 1997 through 2003. In 1998 he made the first of three straight Pro Bowls and was named first-team All-Pro, a season Madden NFL 99 put at a calculated 92. He was second-team All-Pro in 2000, the year Madden NFL 2001 also listed him at 92.

On September 23, 2001 at Foxboro Stadium he hit Drew Bledsoe on the sideline; the quarterback suffered a sheared blood vessel in his chest and lost his job to Tom Brady. Madden NFL 03 rated Lewis 88 for the 2002 season. He spent all 13 of his seasons with the Jets and started 199 of the 200 games he played, finishing with 1,232 tackles, 52.5 sacks, 14 interceptions and four interception returns for touchdowns.
